Oil seals
Shaft seals are sealing elements designed to prevent the leakage of liquids and lubricants and to protect internal parts of machinery from the ingress of contaminants. They are used primarily at the shaft–housing interface, where they ensure sealing during rotational or axial movements.
A typical design comprises an elastomer sealing lip mounted in a supporting casing made of metal or plastic; in many variants the sealing lip is supplemented by a garter (circumferential) spring that maintains contact with the shaft. The material composition and the shape of the sealing lip affect resistance to media, temperature and wear.
Shaft seals are used in industrial machines, gearboxes, engines and bearing housings to retain lubricants and protect against the ingress of dust, dirt and moisture. The choice of a specific design and material composition is determined by operating conditions and sealing requirements.
